In the lore I'm working on. Vertisma used to be multiple beings called Vertismians. until they were all killed off after a huge war with the humans. (Neither side won) Millions of years later, the Vertismian's corpses merged and formed a giant mesh of the Vertismian's material which was the first phase of Vertisma. And sooner or later, it was also killed off and etc. etc. (It's really long lore...)
