Emma Chapter 1 My name is Emma. I am 13 years old. My hair is the color of sunshine, and my blue eyes sparkle like the sea. My bestie’s name is Sarah, we always have so much fun together! I am very popular at my school, and very pretty. Most of the girls like me! Even my teachers like me! But there’s one girl… that none of the other girls talk to, her name is Nora, she’s got curly orangish-reddish hair and a nice smile, but she’s just different… she’s a Christian. I never have been to church, but Sarah has, she said it was just a man standing at a tall desk thing, reading some confusing, giant, book. At my school I am very well behaved, I obey the teacher very well, although I don’t like school much. I try to get my homework done fast as I can, and I’m very smart! I wish I could play with my friends all day. But if I didn’t go to school, I couldn’t see them as much! Today it was Monday “A whole new week!” I say to myself, I am so excited to see my bestie! As I walk along in the cold autumn breeze, (I walk because my school is only a couple blocks away), I wonder what my friends are doing, I am always sure that they are waiting for me because they always say the more the merrier! When I got to Willow School, I noticed my friends chatting about some exiting event. “Hey girly!” cried one of my friends called Susanne, we call her Suzy though. I notice Nora all alone just sitting on the steps of the school. But then I hear Sarah say, “Are you girls exited for the Spelling Bee?” ‘It’s on Monday!” For a second, I hesitate, but I say “Yeah, we are going to practice really hard!” but in my mind I say, “I don’t need to.” “I am already so smart!” “Well, I’m sure Emma might win!” Says Suzy, “She always does a great job!” I blush, “She’s right!” I think, not even worrying about my pride. But then I think about losing, “My friends will think I am not smart at all, if I lose!” butterflies flutter in my stomach at most of the talking about the Spelling Bee. “Ding” “Ding” “Ding” The school bell rings, I’m happy that the talking about the Spelling Bee is over for a little while, we study about science, history, and geography. In English class our teacher says “Now, the Spelling Bee is in a week, so I want you all to study very hard!” The same feeling I had earlier is back my stomach, but I try to ignore it though. At lunch me and my friends sit together and chat, this time they don’t mention the Spelling Bee, but talk about nail stuff. I see Nora again sitting alone with no friends at her side, just quiet, same old Nora, alone.
