Description

This is a project to help think about a math strategy for subtraction called "Going Up Through 10." Our 2nd grade class learned about the strategy on 2/16/16 and practiced on page 63 of our Grade 2 Everyday Mathematics journals. The teacher notes in Everyday Mathematics suggested the mile marker analogy. I showed students the desert highway background with changing mile markers, then asked for their suggestions. Some suggestions included: 1. Add cars that move. 2. Have the user say how far to go. 3. Have the mile marker change automatically. 4. Use ASK/ANSWER. If ANSWER is ______, then change the number by ___________. 2/17 Student Suggestions: 1. Could it change to different highways? (random) (perhaps each time you go a mile) (Sam B.) 2. Add SOUND for the car when moving. (Sidney) 3. Go to a different level with harder questions. (Emerson) 4. Change number line colors. (LG) 5. Let the player choose their car color. (Halina?) 6. Show an animation of a car driving down the road as a cool "reward" for getting the problem right. (Arianna) 7. Switch to a city backdrop--"You found your way back to the city." (Layla) 8. Change the scene as the car moves. (Lily) 9.
