[ Story ] Carnation stepped silently out of its den and stretched languidly in the deepening night. The clock chimed softly, its ticking dragging them downward, always downward. Half-heartedly they tried to slip their claw under the collar, to rip off the whispering clock hung from its throat, but of course it was futile. It was always futile. They had brought it upon themself, trying to stop time... No. No, it wasn't their fault. The Timekeeper had done this ... /they/ were the one to blame. Not Carnation. They were in the right here, after all. The clock glinted smugly in the swiftly fading sunlight, as if pointing out how quickly the light sputtered and died, how rapidly time passed in this mortal world Carnation was trapped in. If only they could tear this lock from their cell, the clock from the collar, the leather from their neck. If only. Tsk. It wouldn't have /stopped/ time. Only slowed it down. Perhaps there would be less strife in a world governed by plants. A peaceful cosmos, for once. Carnation would have ruled the world well. But of course the others hadn't seen that. They'd thrown Carnation down to the mortal world, not seeing their mistake, not seeing the grave error they had committed. It was a terrible thing they'd done, a terrible thing indeed. Carnation sighed, and the clock murmured, and time kept ticking... ticking.
