Instructions

So I’m going to start at the beginning. (Part 1) My first grade teacher (FGT) had a parakeet named Dulce. He passed away a few years ago, and she got a new bird. He’s called Mike. My (vet) mom has a friend whose parakeets had chicks, so I brought one to FGT to be a companion to Mike about 6 months ago. The new bird was dubbed Snap Pea. Now, parakeet genders are easy to tell. Once they’re adults, on the males, this part on the beak where the nostrils are turns blue, and on the females, it’s a tan-pink. But the chicks and juveniles start at tan, so we didn’t know Snap Pea’s gender. FGT’s class all assumed Snap Pea was a girl. They were right. So now FGT has a male and female bird. I predicted this going well or not well, depending on if FGT wanted several lil baby birds to try to squeeze into the fairly small cage. Anyways, that’s the context.

Description

(Part 2) So when we came back from February break, apparently FGT and her assistant teacher (AT) noticed that the birds were making weird noises and feeding each other more than usual, and Snap Pea looked a bit larger. So yeah. They researched, and the parakeets might lay eggs in like a month. They got them a nesting box (with a glass panel on one side so the class/teachers can see in) and we’re predicting chicks! Now I’m doing a bunch of research on parakeet eggs/parents/chicks to make sure that it all goes well and so I can know about when the eggs will hatch. FGT and AT are keeping me updated on the birds, since I usually come into the classroom before classes start to check on them (the birds) anyways. (This is normal since I brought Snap Pea.) So yeah! Baby biiiiirds :D I’m going to keep updating this as things happen, which is why this is Update 0. Bye yall ;)
