Grif first appeared at the start of Episode 1, along with Simmons. Grif was forced into the Red army after the first military draft in hundreds of years. He is incredibly lazy and a loudmouth, often talking back to Sarge. In Reconstruction it is revealed that he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, but is later demoted to the fictitious rank of "Minor Junior Private Negative First Class" because of a deal between Sarge and Agent Washington. It is eventually revealed that Grif does not avoid work or ignore orders out of sheer laziness, but as a way showing disrespect towards Sarge, whom he dislikes. He has a mostly begrudging kinship with his teammates, and is slow to assist them. Grif is shown to be relatively adept at driving vehicles, including the Warthog, Hornet, and even a Pelican.
