Then Ajea turned back to look at Arika, who was waiting for them at the edge of the wall of darkness enclosing this small, glowing clearing Ajea followed Arika into the darkness ahead. As Ajea stepping into the darkness, it was as if a wave of freezing water had poured over them, and for a moment it was easy to believe that Ajea had somehow ended up in the bottom of a very, very deep pool after all. For a moment, Ajea even struggled to breathe. But after what seemed like an age, Ajea summoned the courage to inhale a tentative breath. No cold water filled their lungs. But freezing, heavy air did. Ajea looked around to spot Arika in the darkness, which was easy due to Arika’s long, almost bioluminescent fur. Ajea suddenly found something quite familiar about Arika. It wasn’t the fact that Arika’s fur seemed to be made out of water from the midnight zone itself, with areas of luminesnt fur that gave the impression of glowing fish swimming just under the surface, but it was more the way Arika’s fur wavered in the air, they way it’s ears perched neatly atop its head, folded backwards ever so slightly. “Who… are you?” Ajea said slowly, and Arika turned to meet their gaze. Those glowing, bright eyes swimming with eternal tears were ever so familiar. “I am…” Arika’s gaze saddened suddenly, as if remembering a dream of a dream of a world or a time that would never come again. “I am… no one.” Arika murmured finally, “I am… a being so ancient yet so eternal that time has lost its meaning. I am one of the lost, one of the wandering, that once traveled this forest in search of freedom. Now I seek nothing but to do the same. To be free of this dream realm of darkness. To be reassured that I may eternally wander once more.” Arika and Ajea continued walking in silence. They walked for what seemed like ages, Arika leading the way with its guiding luminance and Ajea following on unsteady paws. And through the darkness they went, until, it seemed darkness was no more. A faint, red light in the distance. A light that slowly grew larger and larger. Ajea could suddenly see the ground they were walking on. It was the same long, purple-ish grass from the light clearing. They looked up and suddenly, out of the darkness, the dim light showed a large rocky outcrop ascending into darkness above. It was huge, a miniature mountain, surface smooth and whether from some long-gone source of water. Or maybe, smoothed from just existing in this place. Ajea supposed it was, technically, underwater. The constant flow of the air alone may have been enough to whether the stone. Ajea snapped back to attention when Arika started moving again, leading Ajea around to the other side of the huge outcrop. Ajea stopped in their tracks as they turned the corner. It was a large clearing, surrounded by coiling vines and ivy that formed a strong wall around the clearing. The small gap Ajea and Arika had slipped through must be the entrance to the clearing/hollow, a small tunnel surrounded by the vine wall and located next to the side of the large outcrop. While the majority of the perimeter was enclosed by coiled vines and other unknown flora, the side that Ajea and Arika were closest to was bordered by a mix of vines that disappeared into cracks in the rocky outcrop, and the rocky outcrop itself. Which served as a perimeter just as the vines did. The inside of the hollow was covered in that same long, purple-grey, glowing grass, only twice as high and unbelievably soft. Glowing, firefly-like specks of light lit up the clearing, and there was atleast a hundred of them, just like in the light clearing from before. Arika slowly lead Ajea through the wavering grass into the very centre of the clearing. “Where are we?” Ajea asked tentatively. Arika turned slowly to Ajea. It smiled sadly through the glowing tears. “Welcome, Ajea,” Arika murmured, “To the midnight zone.” [LORE CONTINUED IN DTAE 5]
