Pakicetus is an extinct genus of amphibious cetacean mammals that lived about 49 million years ago. It is the earliest known direct ancestor of modern whales. It was a wolf-like animal that lived in and around water, eating fish and other small animals. It had webbed feet and lived on the shore. Scientists were able to link Pakicetus to the evolutionary lineage of whales, because of its distinct, dense ear bones.
