This entire project is an emulation of the SAM (Software Automatic Mouth) program, originally written by Don't Ask Software (now SoftVoice) for the Commodore 64, but was available for other computers like the Apple II. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_Automatic_Mouth I have yet to add proper support for diphthongs, so words that blend vowels like 'defeat' and 'room' might be pronounced wrong.
