LORE TIME BABAYYYYYYY tw: themes of trauma Born into the richest family in her country, Watermelon Sorbet, or just Suki for short, was always forced to be an aristocrat. Her parents always reminded her that she was disappointing the family if she wasn’t perfect, and went so far as to punish her by taking away food if she failed to behave ‘properly’ in public. Why couldn’t she just be normal, like the other kids, and hang out at parks and go on bike rides? Maybe it sounded odd, but she didn’t want to be rich. Couldn’t she fit in to society? Not be ‘worshipped’ by others? Not so soon after she started to think about this, her parents let her go out into the town, with a bodyguard, of course. She was walking down the street, her vision being blocked by camera flashing, but she saw somebody walking on the other side of the sidewalk. Somebody pretty. Somebody who’s purely existing seemed to light up the streets. Maybe it was the cameras, but she was pretty convinced that it was them. She managed to catch a glimpse of them as they walked past her, and she felt herself blush a bit. At dinner that night, she decided to tell her parents about her want for a normal life. They couldn’t believe she wanted to give up her status to fit in with the middle class. They finally gave in under one condition; she could never come back. She thought about her options, and finally decided: she would leave, never to return, and live her own life. Suki was finally freed from her strained life. She could finally be herself and happy. The next day, she packed up all she needed and left in the early morning. Walking out the door, she glanced up at their house one last time, finally sighing and calling a taxi. The first few city days were rough, but Suki adapted quickly. She hadn’t seen the other girl yet, but she wasn’t going to give in; she came here for a reason. With the funds from her bank account, Suki managed to rent a small apartment, where she would be able to store her belongings, and also have a comfortable place to rest. It wasn’t the highest quality, but it was good enough for Suki, who was still ecstatic about city life. The 6th day in the city, she saw the girl, managing to get a better look at her this time. She was beautiful. A dazzling amethyst shard; she flitted her gaze over to Suki for a split second, giving her a warm smile, and continuing on. Suki stopped, turning around only to see her walking away, and sighed. How would they ever be able to meet? The city was far too big, she thought to herself. The very next day, Suki stopped into an accessory shop to buy some new bracelets. She walked through the door, and stopped in her tracks. The amethyst was the shopkeeper. Approaching her, Suki put on a warm smile and waved. “Hi there miss!” she greeted. “Hello,” the amethyst replied. “How may I help you today?” she asked. “I was just… uh… wondering if you had any…” Suki stumbled over her words. “If you’re just here to browse around, that’s okay too! We have jewelry up front, bags on my left, and also some shoes and hats in the back. Help yourself!” “Thanks…” Suki replied with a sheepish smile. “By the way, you seem pretty cool. You can stay a while, if you’d like. I’d be happy to show you some of my personal favorite items we have!” the amethyst chimed. “I appreciate it, uhh…” “Ava! You can call me Ava.” “Ava. Noted!” Suki smiled. The day after, Suki went back to the accessory shop. And the day after that. And the one after that. After Ava’s shifts at the store, they would both walk back to Suki’s apartment to unwind and watch television. Before they knew it, they were closer than they could ever imagine. They pictured a life together, a downtown condo in a safe community, happily living their lives and enjoying each other’s company. Suki did it. She was finally happy.
