My second cousin Sophia (deadname) recently came out as trans and changed his name to Luke (not legally yet), I am an always will be a trans ally (I'm trans myself) so I've started calling him Luke and using he/him pronouns for him, but the rest of my family is being less supportive. My maternal grandma is a raging transphobe and always will be, but I don't care because she barely knows Luke and is never in contact with his family. My great aunt (Luke's grandma) started out as unhappy with this change, but she has recently come round to the fact that Luke is much happier now. Even so, when he is brought up in conversation, my family calls him by his deadname and say things like "she uses he/him pronouns now" or refer to him as "Sophia/Luke" instead of just Luke. I'm really cross about the fact that everyone acknowledges that he is now a boy, but still misgender and deadname him.
