Instructions

“Careful Sunflower, one wrong move and the bird will know you are there,” Ash warned. Sunflower nodded, creeping ever closer to her unsuspecting prey. He paws barely making a sound on the soft grass. The wind ruffled her fur, making it sway and dance. And Sunflower relished the feel of it, then inwardly shook herself. She couldn’t afford to lose the blackbird. Sunflower pounced, and at first, it seemed she had missed completely, but luckily, she had pinned the bird’s tail. She killed it swiftly, then turned, beaming, towards her father. Ash grinned back. “Well done!” He praised her. “Now, let’s get back to Heather.” Sunflower deflated a little. Heather, Sunflower’s mother, was rarely impressed and pushed her daughter more than ever. “Can’t we hunt a little longer?” She asked, trying not to sound like she was begging. Sunlight filtered through the tree canopy above her, making the ground look like a fallow deer’s back. Ash smiled warmly at her and gave in after a moment’s hesitation. “Alright. But only for a little while longer, Heather will start to worry if we are out for too long.” Sunflower highly doubted that. Well, maybe she would worry about her mate, Ash. Probably not her though. And at least more hunting time meant more prey, even if Heather did worry about her. Ash took her blackbird from her and buried it quickly, then they set off again. After a couple of minutes, Ash’s ears and nose pricked. He indicated with his tail to a nearby bush, then fell into a crouch. Being as quiet as the mouse he was stalking, Ash crept forward. That mouse will feed Heather well if he can catch it. Sunflower thought. But Ash never got the chance to complete the kill. Suddenly, a monster burst out of the creek in front of them. Sunflower and Ash both leapt backward, almost unintentionally. Ash steeled himself and spun on one paw to face his daughter. “Run! Hide!” He yowled at her. “W-what about you?” Sunflower choked out. “I’ll fight it, just get to safety!” He called over his shoulder as he ran towards the beast. Sunflower stood there, frozen. But then she realised how violent this would be, and bolted into the bushes to hide. She wanted to be able to see, so she could help if she needed to. Ash was fighting viciously, though the monster was large, with a long snout and sharp teeth. Even though Ash fought as hard as he could, sometimes even the hunters become the hunted.
