The name ''Carboniferous'' means ''coal-bearing,'' and it has this name because it is the period in which most of Earth's coal was produced. The Carboniferous is sometimes called the Age of Amphibians since amphibians were the dominant form of land vertebrate in much of the period. Also there were huge bugs.
