I untie my skates and pull them off, wiggling my toes to warm them up. I put on my gym shoes, stand up and wipe the snow from my pants, then start walking to the house. A minute later, I look back and see Zack coming towards me, looking back at the lake every now and then. "Where's Winter?" I ask him. "She decided to stay down by the lake for a few more minutes. I couldn't stop her," he adds as he sees the look on my face. "But the ice... she could get hurt..." I frown. "She's Winter, Ari. She knows what she's doing," Zack says, the pauses. "I think." We look back in the direction of the lake. "She'll be fine." Zack turns around and heads for the house. I look back one last time and follow Zack. ZACK'S POV I walk towards the house with Ari following me. I'm worried. I know Winter is smart and all, but she just loves the snow and ice and the cold so much, I think that she's become oblivious to the danger that they pose. "You okay?" Ari snaps me back to consciousness. "Do you think that Winter will be all right?" I ask her. "I hope so," she replies. We walk in silence for a few minutes until the house comes into view. Mom bangs the door open. "Where have you been? Where is Winter?" she says, hair disheveled. "We went down to the lake to skate for a bit. We decided to come back but Winter stayed at the lake," I say, kicking off my shoes. "You know you're not supposed to leave her alone! She could get hurt!" Mom says worriedly. "It's okay, she'll be fine," Ariana says, pulling her coat off. "No it's not fine! Go back for her right now!" Ariana stops taking her coat off, leaving it hanging on one shoulder. I look up at Mom, standing on the carpet in my I Love Doctor Who socks. "Okay, we'll go back," I say, sighing. Ariana puts her other arm back in her coat as I pull on my shoes. "And hurry!" Mom says. "Okay Mom, we will," Ariana assures her. She opens the door and walks outside. I follow. I look back at Mom before closing the door. She looks worried. I pull the door shut and jog after Ariana as she runs to the lake. After a few minutes of running, I trip over nothing and fall on my face. "Zack, c'mon on!" Ariana says, panting. I get up and look down. I'm standing on wet dirt. The snow is gone. I look at Ariana. She's staring at the lake. It's completely unfrozen. And Winter is gone. "Winter?" Ariana calls. "Where are you?" I walk over to her and look around. Winter is nowhere to be seen. Her gym shoes are still at the edge of the lake. Ariana looks at me with tears in her eyes. "I think she's gone," she says. I look out at the lake again, then turn back to Ariana. She hugs me. "She is gone," I say. "She's gone." Ariana starts crying so hard her shoulders shake. I hug her tighter. I knew what she felt. I felt it too. Winter was the heart of the family, the one who kept everything together. I pull away from her and looked at the lake. I knew then that this trip to the lake would be the last time we would ever go there. The last time that we would skate there. The last time we would ever skate. The last winter. ================================================== Credits Coding - Me Art - @MoonstarBubbles for the snowflakes Music - @Novakitty ================================================== Notes Okay, so I decided to write a Part Two for this story. Partly because a few people wanted it, partly because people kept asking if she was dead, and partly because I wanted to. I decided to switch POV's a bit, since Winter, well... And this is a bit fast paced, but I did my best. Enjoy! Also, here is some extra info from Google Docs: Pages: 2 Words: 615 Characters: 3075 Characters excluding spaces: 2494 1/12/15 - Project shared at 1:09 pm. 2/2/16 - Fixed a bunch of typos and added info from Google Docs.
