Space, Click and W In 1946 A&LE 544 was in a wreck that destroyed the engine, this left a gap in the A&LE's high speed freight roster. Looking to fill the gap and gain more motive power as the post war economy started to effect the A&LE. The A&LE approached the B&M about buying two of there T1a 2-8-4's to fit in with the A&LE's 2-8-4's, the B&M was glad the get the two Berkshires off their hands as the B&M had grown tired of the issues with the T1's rear truck. A&LE 545 and 546 where placed into service, they were classified L-2. Immediately the A&LE found the L-2's where inferior when compared to the A&LE's previous Berkshires do their rear trucks and so their place on slower freights alongside the A&LE's 2-8-8-2's. In hopes of fixing the engines issue 545 received a new rear truck based on the L-1's rear truck in 1951. The new truck appeared to fix all the issue however the modification was not applied to 546 as the railroad was dieaslizing and wanted to focus on their diesels instead. 546 was retired in 1955 and 545 was retired in 1956, both were scrapped.
