Instructions

I was sitting in a meeting in the secret location of the S.I.U (Secret Investigators Union). “We are trying to stop The Panthers from stealing both of the halves of the Ruby. They’ve tried to steal it before, and they are going to try again.” My boss Chai was saying. “If they get both halves the whole world would be under their control.” I nodded. I wanted to stop the Panthers as much as anyone else at the S.I.U. Chai pointed to the screen. “We need to stop them!” On the screen, there were two pictures. One was a girl with long red hair and she was wearing a black sweater. The second picture was a picture of a girl as well. She had long brown hair and was wearing a grey T-shirt. I knew them too well. They used to work here at the S.I.U. Their names were Ivy and Lainey. Between their pictures, there was a picture of the Ruby halves. “Now go and save the world.” Everyone in the Auditorium cheered and started to file out. Once I stepped out into the bright sunlight I heard my name being called. “Cori!” I turned around and saw my friend Ava running towards me. She was wearing a blue T-shirt and black leggings. She had short black hair that was hanging down above her shoulders. “Cori! You didn’t wait for me!” She stopped in front of me, panting for breath. “So, what do you want to do?” “Hey, Shorty.” I turned around. “Hey, Peter." Peter was wearing a red shirt. He had orange hair and glasses. “Shouldn’t you be hacking into someone’s computer?” I asked. “You do work in the Hacking and Tech Division?” “No.” He replied. “After the meeting, I asked Chai if I could take a break. She said yes, so here I am, taking a break.” “Are you allowed to? Because I can go ask Chai-” “Okay, okay, I lied. I’ll get back to work.” Peter quickly walked away. I turned to Ava. “Sorry, what did you ask?” “I said what do you want to do?” “Well,” I said. “I am kind of hungry.” A few minutes later we were sitting in the cafeteria with a plate of spaghetti in front of each of us. The cafeteria was a large modern room with lots of tables. The buffet counter was at the back and there were three big windows. We were sitting by one of the windows. “That meeting was quick,” Ava said. “I thought it would be longer.” “Yeah,” I said. “Hey, guys!” Ava looked up. “Hi, Eve” Eve was wearing a black hoodie and leggings. “Whatcha doing?” “Nothing really,” Eve replied. “Just saving the world.” “Who did you save?” Well. There was this kid, who was about to be hit by a bus…” I looked down at my black shirt as they continued talking. The sunlight was shining on it. It felt warm. Two shadows quickly crossed it. I looked up and saw a figure run across the window. “The Panthers are here,” I said. I ran over to the Intruder Alarm and pulled the lever. Immediately a loud alarm started to beep. Everyone jumped up and began looking around. I ran out the door and saw Ivy and Lainey sneak through a window that led to Chai’s office. I ran toward the building. I swiftly opened the door and I ran down the long hallway. I didn’t stop running until I reached the door that led to Chai’s office. I pushed open the door. “Stop!” I cried. Ivy and Lainey turned around. “Well if it isn’t little Cori,” Ivy said. “The one who chose to be good.” “I told you I wanted to keep the Ruby halves safe. Safe from people like you.” I replied. “Well if you want to join, you can join now,” Lainey said. “We have one slot left.” I looked between Ivy and Lainey. Footsteps echoed down the hall. “Chai is coming, so you don’t have much time,” Ivy added. “Make your choice.” The footsteps grew louder. I looked at the Ruby halves. They were sitting in a clear glass cover that would only open when a code was punched into the keypad. “You said you would if you wanted to be bad. Be bad and join the Panthers.” Ivy said. I slowly walked over to the Ruby halves. I punched in the code: 19-9-21. The case opened. I took one Ruby half, and before Ivy could take the other I closed it. Chai ran into the room. She saw the Ruby half in my hand and said: “Cori, give me the Ruby.” The Panthers were looking at me and it was as if they were saying: Make your choice. I looked between The Panthers and Chai. Ava, Peter, and Eve ran into the room. Ivy stepped forward to take it. Chai put out her hand. Then I closed my eyes and made one of the most important decisions in my life...
