They are sad and depressed because they did nothing wrong to hurt the human race, but then they were harmed close to extinction from... us. The song kind of puts a thought of you carrying the guilt of killing so many beautiful creatures (hence carrying coffins) from actions as simple as not bothering to recycle, donate to help the animals, or as illegal as selling rhino horns on the blackmarket and hunting down endangered tigers/leopards.
