It’s only the crack of dawn, and every bird in the Mountain Pheasants are sleeping. Well, everyone except for Peak, Grass, and another bird called Stone, who were on guard. Peak and Grass were best friends and siblings, though they had no idea why there was another bird on guard, the one that’s called Stone. Just then, Peak heard a rustling noise. Rustle, rustle, rustle. There it was again! Rustle, rustle, rustle. “Grass!” Peak whispered, “Did you hear that?” “Yes,” Grass whispered back, “I think someone is intruding.” Just then, a noise of crackling leaves came. Crack, crunch, crunch, crack. “I think there’s an enemy!” Grass whisper-shouted. “Alpine Birds,” Peak spat out, “Only they could come up here.” But, unfortunately, they were wrong. It was just Stone, rustling about. Peak and Grass spotted that Stone was the rustler, too. “Stone!” Grass whisper-shouted again, “Stop rustling! We thought you were an enemy!” “What are you doing, anyways?” asked Grass, “To me, you’re just attracting attention for the… Alpine Birds.” He said the word Alpine Birds like it was a piece of moldy cheese. “You’ll learn eventually,” Stone tells Peak and Grass, “And, seriously, you need a history lesson!” “What do you mean?” asks Peak, “We don’t even miss even one of our history classes!” “I’ll tell you later,” Stone responds, trying not to laugh. Peak and Grass both get back to work, deciding to ignore Stone. After all, they do think Stone is weird. By now, the first rays of sunlight have made their way through the sky, streaking the grass and leaves of trees with light. Grass and Peak yawn, and as the Time Rock lights up with a faint turquoise violet glow, Peak, Stone, and Grass all agree that their shift is over, and go back to their tree. …… Soon, it’s time for lunch as the sun shines brightly onto the Time Rock, making it glow yet another color, which is very light yellow. As soon as Peak and Grass wake up after going to sleep when their shift was over, Cloud, their leader, called a meeting. She told everyone about Stone, and other boring stuff about prey. After she was done, she called Peak and Grass to her den to talk. “Can we just have one taste of prey first?” moaned Grass, “Me and Peak are hungry.” “You can eat after I tell you about Stone,” Cloud told them strictly, “You also need a history lesson.” “WHAT?!” yelled Peak and Grass in unison, “WE DON’T!” “Yes, you do,” Cloud said in that calm voice of hers, “But I’ll tell you the history lesson after you eat.” “Phew,” Peak sighed, “I can’t wait to-” “No, not now,” Cloud laughed, “I have to tell you about Stone first.” “Nooooo” Peak and Grass moaned in unison again, “Stone’s weird” …… One lesson later, Peak and Grass are heading to go eat food. They go take some berries and bugs, taking them to Cloud’s den grumpily. As to why, it’s because of their history lesson. Peak and Grass are now in Cloud’s den, eating their lunch as they perch on a ledge. “Are you ready?” Cloud asked them There was silence from Peak and Grass as they stuffed their beaks with food. Cloud had started her story. She looked at Peak and Grass, then told them her history lesson.
