The EMD BL2 is a Diesel Electric locomotive built by GM's Electro Motive Division. A total of 58 units were built between 1947 and 1949. They were unpopular due to the hybrid style design of a Cowl Unit and a Hood Unit. Thus resulting in a engine with the downsides of both with little benefits. However they were still a mechanically fine engine leading to them still seeing service. However they could not compete with the modern Hood Units and many were stricken to the dead tracks early. However these engines caught the fancy of many railfans. who referred to them as "EMD's Ugly Duckling's" A Name they still carry today. Due to this interest a good number were preserved and 2 still run today.
