Before the Brisbane Lions of the AFL existed prior to 1997, there used to be two more teams that existed in the league, the Fitzroy Lions and the Brisbane Bears. Although Fitzroy was the original, The Bears are the origins of the Lions, formed during the VFL in 1987.
