Builder: EMD HP: 3600 Top Speed: 71 MPH Prime Mover: EMD 645E3 Total Produced: 1260 from 1965-1971 (scroll down for more info) The EMD SD45 is a six axle diesel-electric locomotive made by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in 1965. It was created to compete against the 3,600 horsepower locomotives of General Electric. The idea was to simply add more cylinders to their reliable EMD 645 prime mover. However, the SD45 had many reliability issues, causing many railroads to lose interest in it. This would be fixed later on, and many railroads still enjoyed the locomotives. The SD45 would soon have more variants (not in order): SD45-2: SD45 with "Dash 2" specifications SD45X: Experimental variant, only the SP would purchase these. SD45T-2: Tunnel Motor made for railroads like the SP and Rio Grande, which had many tunnels in their routes. SDP45: MANDATED PASSENGER VAR- jk Created for passenger service on railroads FP45: Cowl unit version passenger variant F45: Cowl Unit version requested by the Santa Fe for freight service It would also have many other rebuilt variants by other railroads.
