Alco built the first FA in 1946 and would build them until 1959. The FA was a 4 Axle GP like Cab Unit design having a standard 4 Axle wheel base and was often used for local commuter trains and the normal freight's. The Alco FA was not a BAD Unit however it was known for problems mostly coming down to later rushed production with later model units mostly involving the prime mover. Despite these late problems it remained one of Alco's few good selling units. (Compared to the rest of Alco's unit's) They served the railroads for a long time and one or two can still be found on a shortline the rest have since been retired but many have found new lives on tourist line's.
