After 156 years of British rule, Hong Kong was finally returned to China in respect of the 99-year lease treaty. While the British ruled Hong Kong, they had transformed a small fishing village to one of the largest economic centers in the world. As part of an agreement, China would maintain Hong Kong's British policies under "one country, two systems".The policy would ensure that Hong Kong's original democratic governing and economic systems will not change until 2047.
