(here's my writing excerpt:) “Hello there.” I turn to Theo. “That was a really good British accent, holy crap.” But her gaze is higher, trained on a branch a few feet above our heads. “Hello there.” Someone says again, but it isn’t Theo who’s speaking. A small gray bird about the size of my fist sits in the maple branch, watching us. “Hello, hello, hello,” it calls, the warbles of your typical bird morphed into speech, somehow perfectly mimicking a stuffy British accent that sounds like it belongs to a butler. “A mockingbird,” I marvel. A songbird with the habit of copying other birds and sounds in their environment. I didn’t know they could live so deep in the forest. “I thought mockingbirds could only mimic other birds and, like, the occasional car alarm,” says Theo. “Well, how would it be talking if it wasn’t just repeating something it’s already heard?” “Already heard,” the bird echoes, proving my point.
