A independência do Brasil foi um processo iniciado a partir da Revolução Liberal do Porto, que levou ao rompimento entre Brasil e Portugal, no dia 7 de setembro de 1822. Em 1808, D. João VI e a família real portuguesa mudaram-se para o Rio de Janeiro1. Durante o Período Joanino, medidas modernizadoras foram implantadas no Brasil. Em 1815, o Brasil foi elevado à condição de Reino Unido e, assim, o Brasil deixou de ser colônia. Em 1820, a Revolução Liberal do Porto foi iniciada em Portugal e reivindicava o retorno do rei português1. A Independência do Brasil foi proclamada em 7 de setembro de 1822, pelo então Príncipe Regente, Dom Pedro de Alcântara. Esta ocasião também é chamada de “Grito de Independência”, pois, segundo a tradição, Dom Pedro teria dito em alto e bom som a frase “independência ou morte” à guarda que o acompanhava às margens do riacho Ipiranga, em São Paulo2. No dia 1º de dezembro do mesmo ano, D. Pedro foi coroado imperador do Brasil, com o título de D. Pedro I, posto que ocupou até o ano de 1831.
The independence of Brazil was a process that began with the Liberal Revolution of Porto, which led to the rupture between Brazil and Portugal, on September 7, 1822. In 1808, D. João VI and the Portuguese royal family moved to the Rio de Janeiro1. During the Johannine Period, modernizing measures were implemented in Brazil. In 1815, Brazil was elevated to the status of the United Kingdom and, thus, Brazil ceased to be a colony. In 1820, the Liberal Revolution of Porto started in Portugal and demanded the return of the Portuguese king1. The Independence of Brazil was proclaimed on September 7, 1822, by the then Prince Regent, Dom Pedro de Alcântara. This occasion is also called the “Cry of Independence”, because, according to tradition, Dom Pedro would have said in a loud and clear voice the phrase “independence or death” to the guard that accompanied him on the banks of the Ipiranga stream, in São Paulo2. On December 1st of the same year, D. Pedro was crowned Emperor of Brazil, with the title of D. Pedro I, a post he held until 1831.
