Space bar to fire (3-round bursts only) R to reload During the Advanced Combat Rifle (ACR) program, AAI decided to participate. Their design fired flechette rounds in 3-round burst mode from a 30-round proprietary magazine at 1800 rounds per minute. As the flechette rounds fired by this weapon used the standard cartridge cases, soldiers tended to load standard munitions into the weapon, causing malfunctions as the gases were tapped from the barrel earlier than the M16A2 the weapon was to replace. With this in mind, AAI designed a magazine that didn't accept conventional rounds and modified the magazine well so it will not accept magazines used by the M16A2. The project was not a success, and AAI later collapsed after losing again to General Electric in the Future Rifle program initiated by the U.S. Army.
