Shugo Rei was originally just a regular fox kit called Seishin, but when a tree fell, killing her parents and 5 siblings, she was adopted by a young couple and raised with a litter of Shiba Inu pups. However, Seishin was found with the pups in the couple's backyard, and their neighbor, who had no idea that the couple had adopted a fox kit, sh()t her. The Goddess Kannon and the Deity Inari took pity on Seishin and turned her into a kitsune. However, the powerful beings gave Seishin a challenge to earn her tails. She had to find the spirits of all 5 of her siblings and her parents before the next full moon and put their wandering spirits to rest. After completing this challenge, Seishiin earned the name Shugo Rei, meaning guardian spirit. She now protects children from abuse by turning their parents into trees and striking them with lightning. And bc kitsunes usually fear dogs but Shugo Rei was raised among them and does not fear them, she is stronger than most kitsunes when faced with dogs and even enjoys taking the form of a gray and reddish-brown Shiba Inu.
