Facts: The Sun: The Sun is the largest object in the solar system, 1.3 million Earths would fit inside it. It is made up of hydrogen and helium. Mercury: On Mercury, the sunlight is 11 times brighter. Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system, just barely bigger than our moon. Mercury is named after the Greek god Hermes, Mercury being its Roman name. Venus: Because of its thick atmosphere, Venus is the hottest planet. On the surface, Venus is about 900 degrees Fahrenheit. Venus is closer to Earth than Mars. Venus is over 67.6 million miles from the Sun. Venus is named after the Greek god Aphrodite. Earth: This is the planet that we all live on (hopefully) Earth is the only known place to be inhabited by living things. Also the only planet in this solar system with liquid water on the surface. Unlike other planets, the name does not come from Greek/Roman mythology. Earth is Old English simply meaning 'the ground.' Mars: Mars is cold and dusty with a thin atmosphere. However, evidence shows that Mars was wetter and warmer a long time ago. Mars is over 153.4 million miles from the Sun. One year on Mars is 687 Earth Days. Mars has 2 moons; Phobos and Deimos.
