there are three pets to capture llama, chick, and bear (uh smth else really rare) or you can fight them a to show captured pets and s to hide them pressing the green flag doesn't reset your pets, so don't worry! capturing pets and fighting enemies will both give you exp if the enemy still attacked after you pressed the capture button, it means that the capture failed. the pets list is a little glitchy so if you captured a pet, it might take a while to load on the pets list.
