Instructions

The Porsche Type 64 is a German record car, designed and built by Ferdinand Porsche, who not only went on to create the successful Porsche auto company, but also helped develop the Panzer VIII Maus heavy tank, the Elefant tank destroyer, and the V-1 flying bomb. He also designed the KDF-Wagen, later VW Beetle, and gave the first Tiger tank its name. The car was built using many components from the KDF-Wagen, and the cab was required to bear resemblance to that of the Beetle. A metal body for the future car and then three examples were built. One was destroyed early in the war. Another was captured from storage by American soldiers in 1945, who would drive it for fun until it broke down. It was scrapped. The third was owned by Porsche's son, then sold to a race driver, who drove it to victory in the 1950 Alpine Rally. It was raced until 1982, and later obtained by a Porsche collector, who attempted to sell it at auction. It failed to sell. The scrapped car was rebuilt and is now on display at the Petersen Museum in California. The original body is on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
