Silentkit was deaf. Which was kind of ironic, because her name WAS Silentkit. She had used to wonder if her parents had actually cursed her when they named her that. She could talk, sure, but she just couldn't hear the words coming out of her mouth. And she was already teased enough; she wasn't going to make it happen MORE. So her parents, Sunears and Whitebird, and her brother, Ryekit, had devised a kind of sign language. They all knew it, as well as Splashstar, the RiverClan leader, and Greenbelly, the medicine cat. Silentkit hated the teasing, but there was one thing she hated even more: silence. Yeah, Silentkit was deaf, but to her, silence wasn't the lack of noise. It was the lack of movement. She couldn't really stand still for long periods of time. Silentkit was the kind of deaf where she couldn't hear ANYTHING. She had heard her mother's sister had been deaf, too. They hadn't had a sign language, though, back then. And one day, when she was an apprentice, she had just been... taken away by a hawk. Silentkit really, REALLY didn't want to die.
