Click on the top right button (or press A) while on attack mode to switch between your gun, and your sword. When you kill enough enemies, you will be given a choice between three random upgrades. Click the screen with your sword in hand to thrust Click the screen with your gun in hand to shoot, but be wary of how much ammo you use.
