School is almost over. Math is the only subject left- my favorite! Math ends as quickly as it started, and I almost forget about Mx. Hall with the algebra buzzing around in my brain. In the band room, I see Mx. Hall. I go inside and tell them good afternoon. “Good afternoon, Vivien. Thank you for coming.” Well, I didn’t really have a choice. “Um. Yeah. So why did you call me?” “I wanted to talk about this morning. What happened?” “What do you mean? I woke up, then I brushed my teeth, then I ate-” “That’s not what I meant.” The truth is, I know exactly what they mean. I just don’t know how to explain. “Did you come straight from your house?” I sigh. “No, I… I went to the cemetery. Said hi to Mom and Dad. I do it every day…” “But every day, you’re not late. Early, even.” “Yeah. I reach the cemetery at about 6:30, then I stay, like, 20 minutes there, and I bike to school, which takes about 10 minutes.” “So did you walk today?” “Kind of. I biked to the cemetery and then… There was this girl. I think I’ve seen her around at school before. She put my bike in the dumpster and then I had to walk. So I was late. Why?” I don't know why I tell them this. They're just so easy to talk to. They sigh. “I was bullied in middle school too. But ignore the haters, all right? Things will get better. Don’t worry. But if it ever gets too bad, you can talk to me, all right?” I nod. They smile and I wave and walk out. I go to the beach, mulling things over in my head. I sit on a piece of driftwood and do my homework. When that’s done, I practice my clarinet. Soft, smooth music escapes from the bell, and I smile. And then, a chorus of squeaking joins in the music. I gasp. I thought I was alone…
