I start to walk to the library. There must be something I can do. I may not be great at science, but I know that this is bad. On the way to the library, I see my friends playing football. “Arushi! Do you want to play with us?” Aditya calls in Hindi. “Well… I have to go…” “Come on, Aru. One game won’t hurt!” I look at the white ball with black hexagons. It seems to look back enticingly. /Come play, come play/, it seems to call. I sigh. The library can wait. “Coming!” I run to Aditya and the rest of my friends. “Yes!” He grins. “Come on, you’re on my team.” I’m great at sports, but my very old-fashioned mom won’t let me play. She says that I need to learn to clean and do the housework and leave the sports to boys. So, I play in secret with Aditya and all my other friends. I’m the only girl, but no one cares. The only thing that matters to them is that I’m good at playing. We use the trees as goals, and my team wins. As usual. Me and Aditya got the most goals. After the game, he asks if I want to play cricket with him and everyone else. This time, I refuse. “Look, I really have to go. Maybe tomorrow!” I run to the library. At the library, I look around for books on nature. I find a section full of them, and pick out a book called Deforestation-Why it should Stop and sit down to read. I flip through, and come across a colorful page on wildlife. I spot a section on tigers and read through it. “Tigers are listed as Endangered on the IUCN status. There are somewhere around 1,000-3,000 of them left in India, but before deforestation and poaching, there were about 40,000.” I gasp. That’s really little. I look at the picture. It’s a photo of a mom tiger and two cubs play-wrestling. I stand up and go to check out the book. “You like this stuff?” The librarian asks in Hindi as she checks out the book. “I just wanted to take a look at it, it’s very interesting,” I reply. “Good for you. Have a nice day,” she hands me the book. I tell her thank you and walk out.
