Wow, I haven’t done a movie review in a little while. XD Anyways, yesterday, I watched the new Super Mario Bros. Movie (I saw “new,” because there was a different one back in the 90s that was absolutely insane and was nothing like the games XD). And now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I’m ready to give my thoughts on it. I really enjoyed it. It’s a really fun and entertaining movie and very visually stunning, too. I’ll address the elephant in the room now and say that I think Chris Pratt did well as Mario. I think the reason Nintendo and Illumination cast Chris Pratt is because Mario’s actual voice would probably get a bit annoying after a while, but Chris’s voice worked for the movie and I am glad he did try to sound more like Mario in multiple scenes throughout the movie. Like with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, this movie’s plot is nothing too big, the movie more so serves the purpose of introducing us to the characters and to the world they inhabit, and I think it did an excellent job. All the characters were fun to watch, and I don’t really think I can pick one favorite. Though my top 3 are definitely Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Toad. In terms of stuff I didn’t like much, my only real gripe with the movie is that the conversation between Mario and Peach right after they first meet, the conversation that leads to Peach decided to train Mario, felt kinda rushed. Also I think they SLIGHTLY overdid it with the easter eggs/references, but for the most part, all the references are either in the background for eagle-eyed viewers (such as my brother and I) to spot, or just treated as a regular part of the movie’s world, which I think was really great. Unlike the Sonic movie, I’m not really sure this is exactly the best way to get into the Mario fandom, as it’s more so intended for people who are already fans of the games — as evident by the movie’s critic scores, because clearly those reviewers have never played a Mario game before. Luckily, the audience scores are way higher —, though if you haven’t ever played a Mario game, I think this could still be enjoyable if you like entertaining and funny movies with great characters. Man, I loved this movie and I’m excited to see what happens in the sequel (because there was a post-credits scene teasing that the next movie will possibly be some sort of adaptation of Super Mario World).
