/x/ and /φ/ never had agreed upon transcriptions. Initially the de facto way to write them was with the digraphs <kh> and <ph>, respectively. But later on, this evolved into a superscript H diacritic. Similarly, /y/ and /ø/ could either be <ui> and <oi> or U and O with a superscript I diacritic.
