Sustainability Q&A: What is sustainability? One great way to define sustainability is “maintaining the needs of the current generation, while making sure the needs of the next one can be met”. Sustainability is about managing the needs of the people today and making sure there’s resources left for the future. What are the SDGs? The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are 17 goals created to make the world sustainable and a better place. Who created the SDGs? The United Nations (UN) created the SDGs. The United Nations is an international organization created in 1945, created as a place for countries to discuss common issues and come up with solutions. Why were the SDGs created?: The SDGs were created as a way to help solve global issues. The SDGs were created in 2015, and are trying to be completed by 2030. Prior the the SDGs, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were goals from 2000 to 2015 to achieve what the SDGs are meant to achieve. Unfortunately, the MDGs didn’t get completed, so now we have the SDGs. What is SDG 11? SDG 11 is “Sustainable Cities and Communities”. According to the UN website, Sustainable Development Goal 11 is to “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. Why is SDG 11 important? Goal 11 is important because over half of the world lives in cities, and cities account for a lot of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as energy use. Why do this project? While this is for a school, I wanted to do this to take action by spreading awareness about this Sustainable Development Goal-SDG 11. As someone who has used Scratch before, I thought one great way to spread awareness was through a Scratch game. How can I take action? There are many ways to take action. One of them is spreading awareness, which is the goal of this Scratch game. You can tell your friends and family about the SDGs and SDG 11. You can also volunteer in your community or city, or create your own events. You can donate to a trustable charity. One last way to help is making lifestyle choices, like riding a bike instead of driving everywhere (if possible).
