Four years later… I awoke to the sound of a blaring alarm clock. “Five more minutes…” I groaned. I reached over to slap the alarm clock. My hand slapped something warm and fleshy, and I screamed and shot up. “Hi Ashy!” My stepsister Emmy was standing there. “BLAAAARP.” Okay, so turns out the so called “alarm clock” was my sister trying to wake me up. “Em-MY!” I said angrily, “Get out of my room!” “But I wanna play princesses with you!” Emmy said. “I even made you a princess dress!” Emmy held up my favorite dress, but it had sequins and glitter hot glued to it.”EMMY!” I yelled, “What did you DO to my favorite dress!?” “I fixed it!” Emmy said cheerfully. “Get OUT!” I roared. “You’ve RUINED my favorite dress, you’re woken me up early, and you just invade my room!? You’re so ANNOYING!” At this teared welled up in Emmy’s eyes. The kid was just trying to be nice, but she’s such a pain! I’m a fourteen year old, for heaven’s sake! I can’t be going and playing “princesses” with my stepsister! Anyways, that was a pretty horrible start to the day. I slipped on a hoodie and some jeans and headed downstairs for breakfast, where my mom and her new husband Bill were talking. Ugh, speaking of Bill, he is the WORST. My mom married him not long after my grandma died, and he’s so annoying! He’s super nice and cheerful and it drives me insane! Like I swear, he is some kind of happiness robot. And worst, he brought along Emmy, the world’s most annoying nine year old. She’s constantly bugging me, and invading my privacy. “Honey, you wore that hoodie yesterday.” My mom pointed out. “Didn’t ask and Don't care.” I reply, annoyed. “You know, I have a hoodie-’’ Bill started but I interrupted him. “Nope, not interested.” My mom sighed. “Ash, if you just…” she started, but I tuned her out. I grabbed an apple and headed back to my room. “Honey, you have school in an hour!” Mom called. I scoffed and ignored her. I slammed the door behind me. Did every kid go through something like this? I looked at my picture of grandma and a ten-year-old me. I sighed. “Oh, grandma.” I said, “If only you were here.” I ran my finger along the frame. Suddenly, my finger caught something. “What the heck?” It felt like a latch. I pushed it slightly, and the back of the photo frame slip open. Laying there was a small mirror, and a note. “My dear Ashlynn,” I read, “if you’re getting this, it means I am no longer here with you. I’m so sorry, but it was only a matter of time.” I snorted but kept reading. “I’m trusting you with this mirror. You must be very careful with it.” At this I stopped and snorted again. “It’s just a mirror!” I said to nobody in particular, “What harm could it do?” I kept reading further in the letter. “Now I’m sure you’re wondering why you need to be so careful with this mirror.” I rolled my eyes as I read that. “This is no ordinary mirror. Inside it contains a great power, one that cannot be unleashed at any cost. Remember: they are not your friends.” I re-red this last part. “They are not your friends? What does that mean?” “Hello? Can anyone hear me?” A voice called out. I nearly jumped out of my seat. “Hello?” I called back. “There is someone there!” The voice said, delighted. “Can you come here? I’m in the mirror.” I was very confused, but I picked up the mirror and looked at it. My reflection shimmered for a moment before transforming into something different. It was me…but I was beautiful. My messy hair was brushed and pulled back into a ponytail with two blue barrettes the color of my eyes. Suddenly, my reflection grinned. “Hello!” I jumped back. “You talk!” I screamed. My reflection laughed. “Of course I talk! I’m a living human being just like you!” She said. “But you’re in a mirror.” I pointed out. My reflection paused for a split second before saying, “Well, so are you!” I looked around me and laughed. “No, I’m not!” I said. “Well, you are to me!” My reflection said. “I’m Ashlynn, but you can call me Lynn. What’s your name?” “My name is Ashlynn also,” I said, “but everyone calls me Ash.” “Do you like being called Ash?” Lynn asked. I smiled. “Yeah, I do,” I said, “thanks for taking that into consideration, though.” Lynn grinned. “Anytime, Ash.” She paused. “Say, can you hold me next to that big mirror over there?” “That one?” I ask pointing to the giant mirror on the back of my door. “That’s the one!” Lynn says. “Okay…” I walk over and hold the mirror close. Suddenly, a full-body Lynn appears in that mirror. “Hi-hi!” She says, freaking me out. I stumble back into my bed. “You’re tall!” I say. Lynn laughs. “Well, you need that to be the head cheerleader.” I gasped in awe. “You’re the head cheerleader? I’ve always wanted to be the head cheerleader!” I say. Lynn grins. “I’m also a straight-A student, all the boys like me, and I’m super popular!” I gasped in awe. This is exactly who I wanted to be. “I can tell we’re going to be best friends.” I say. Lynn grins. “Oh, yes,” she says, “best friends indeed…”
