“Fool! Do you have any idea what you’re doing?” The voice rang out in the attic. “I know exactly what I’m doing.” A woman’s voice responded, cool and collected. “But the prophecy- the prophecy!” The other voice shrieked back. “We will return!” The voices faded as they were trapped in what they thought was their eternal prison…a small mirror. The woman took the mirro and put it in her pocket before heading out. Two months later… “…The end.” As grandma shut her book, the smell of the old pages was blown throughout the kitchen. My grandma smiled at me. I broke into wild applause. I love grandma’s stories. Little did I know this would be the last one…Grandma coughed and mom rushed in. “Mom, are you alright?” Mommy asked. “Yes, yes, Kathrine, I’m fine.” Grandma said, getting up. My mom stepped away but still looked cautious. “Do you have to go?” I asked grandma, “Why can’t you tell me another story?” Grandma laughed. “I’ll tell you another story tomorrow.” She said. I sighed and pouted. The door creaked open as grandma stepped outside. Mommy patted my head. “Come on, Ash,” she said to me, “let’s get you into bed.” I rushed to get my pj’s on: purple with yellow polka dots. “Brushing teeth, I’m just brushing my teeth, hmmm-hmm-hmm hmm hmm!” I sang cheerfully. I was looking forwards to grandma and her amazing stories tomorrow. My mom knocked on the bathroom door. “You can come in!” I called. My mom opened the door, her face full of tears. I was immediately worried. “Mommy?” I said, “What’s wrong?” My mom looked at me with her eyes full of tears. “It’s Grandma,” She said, “I just got a call from one of her neighbors. They said had a heart attack. They were kind enough to bring her to the hospital. They say she’s regained consciousness, but is still badly injured.” My eyes widened in fear. “No!” I screamed. “No, no, no, no, no! She’s going to be okay, right mommy? Right mommy?!” My mom simply looked away. We rushed to the hospital as quick as we could where grandma was laying in a hospital bed. Her neighbors Mateo and Rosa were sitting at her. My mom nodded at the, and they nodded back. A lot of things were hooked up to grandma, and I admit it…I was truthfully, utterly straight-up terrified. I rushed over to grandma. “Grandma,” I sobbed, “are you going to be okay?” Grandma looked at me. “We don’t know.” She said weakly. I looked at my mom. “She’s going to be okay, right?” I asked. “You heard grandma. We don’t know.” My mom said softly. I rushed over to grandma, my tears now flowing like rivers. “You said-you said you would tell me a story tomorrow.” I said, “You promised!” Grandma looked at me, her eyes weak and full of sadness. “I’m sorry, Ashlynn,” she said, “but I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep that promise.” The clock struck 11, but I didn’t care. “Kathrine…” Grandma said, “take Ashlynn home. She needs to sleep.” My mom nodded tearfully, and dragged a screaming me back into the car. As I sobbed and sobbed, the hospital slowly faded from view. Rain was pounding on the car windshield. The sky was pitch black, and I was exhausted, but the adrenaline of the moment was still rushing through me. When we got back home, I ran up to my room to cry. A picture of me and grandma was sitting on my dresser. I picked it up and hugged it, and the sobbed. After daddy died, I remembered how grandma comforted me. But now that grandma was gone, who was going to comfort me? I tucked myself into bed and cried. The world was ending. Grandma was gone. A doorbell rang. I heard a man’s voice. Of course, it was that man mom liked. What was his name? Bob? Bailey? Oh no, it was Bill. I heard him comforting mommy and I clenched my fists. Eyes burning with tears, I slowly drifted into a dark, dreamless sleep.
