She trains hard to earn his praise and affection, but Fireheart never seems to notice. One day, she decides enough is enough and follows Tigerclaw to the Thunderpath where she is hit by a speeding car. She makes it and is taken to Yellowfang to heal. She does but has a small limp. She expects Fireheart to be pleased and happy to see her better and stronger with her own battle scar but only gets a light frown and a disappointed stare. Angered, Cinderpaw storms off. She asks Yellowfang if she could become a medicine cat apprentice and Yellowfang agrees. Moons pass, and she becomes Cinderpelt. There, Cinderpelt poisons some prey and hides in the medicine cat den. First, she decides to get rid of cats close to Fireheart, first killing Graystripe, Cloudtail, and later Bluestar with the poisoned prey. Yellowfang knows something is not right and finds Cinder's batch of poisoned prey. Yellowfang brings Cinderpelt to the Moonstone and later confronts her, yelling at her apprentice about the deaths of her clan mates. Cinderpelt hisses, claiming that she didn't and lunging a Yellowfang before running off. She sees Fireheart on a Patrol with her brother and attacks Fireheart, telling him that he caused her too much pain.
