Space Built in 1901 for the York & red lion Railroad in mixed duties. The engine was built with a oil headlight but in 1916 4 became the first engine on the Y&RL to have electric appliances. In 1920 the engine received a new spark arrestor nicknamed the "Hat". 4 was the most glamorous engine on the line by this time as engines 1 and 2 had been cut up for scrap. by 1943 4 was left to road duty's while engine 5 handled switching in york and 3 was kept in the shed and used as a backup engine in case 4 or 5 broke down. in 1956 the Y&RL closed, 4 and 5 were moved into storage at the york engine house awaiting sale. The entire Y&RL was purchased by a group of 23 preservationist. 5 would haul the first tourist train as it was in better condition than 4. 4 after a small rebuild returned to service in December 1960. 4 has been running ever since only being taken out of service for two major rebuilds in 1987-1990 and 2011-2013. what makes 4 unique is it's in almost original condition with the only changes being the electric appliances and a new throttle lever different from the original
