yohoho yo ho ho yohoho yo ho ho yohoho yo ho ho yohoho yo ho ho brook backstory spoiler below Brook has a happy crewmate of the Rumbar Pirates, a crew of musicians who wanted to make everyone happy. They found about half their crew sick, so they split the crew in half and brook was the captain of the second half. They found themselves stuck in the Florian Triangle (the one piece equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle) and were all dying. As they were dying, Brook decided that the whole crew should play one final song, for Brook to record on a tone dial so that their dear whale friend Laboon may listen to it when the time comes. They were all playing, until eventually Brook was the last one left alive. He died soon after, but due to his devil fruit, his soul eventually came back to his body, except now it was a skeleton. Brook then had to stay on his ship with his dead crewmates for 50 years, some of it while staying out of the sun because his shadow got taken by Moria 5 years prior to the beginning of the series. Brook ultimately wants to return back to the start of the grand line so that he can play the recording to Lagoon, so that he will fulfill his promise he made all those years ago.
