Sequel to https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/799554951/ These garbage patches are made when enough trash strays into gyres. Gyres are basically circular currents in the oceans. Trash gets trapped in the calmer waters in a gyre's middle. They can get big enough to rival small islands.
