MNRR #3 was built in 1898 by the Rhode island locomotive works. Upon arrival it immediately took up road duty's on the mainline proving itself both more reliable and more powerful than #1 and #2. The engine in winter time usually ran with a huge snow plow on it's front. in 1917 the engine had a electric headlight fitted. for a time in 1919 the engine was assigned to yard duty's in mystic until 0-4-0 #5 arrived. the engine was used heavily in the 1920s and by 1930 the engine started showing it's age. The engine was still kept in service despite it' deteriorating condition. On a cold February morning in 1934 cracks were found in boiler and steam leaked from every crevice and corner. The engine was only steamed in emergency's and started taking up space in the shop. Eventually then engine was put on a few wood boards and slowly taken apart till there was nothing left.
