It was always my hair raven-black straight not styled falling to my shoulders stark in a sea of waves curls ponytails, pigtails and braids hair as pale as white potatoes When they stood, I stood When they sat, I sat When they talked, I stayed silent. Yet they yelled after me crowding around like mosquitos in damp heat pulling at my hair my shirt my white floral pants which I wore because jeans cost too much I would pull up my hood run from their taunts hide in the bathroom cry as their voices reverberated down the hall asking if I lived in the jungle if I could speak English if I was civilized if I was a human being and most of all why my hair was so ugly they'd ask, falling down laughing and yell down the hall "ching chong bing bong" even though I'm not Chinese I dyed my hair blonde curled it took the 5 dollars I had saved to Goodwill for a pair of jeans and they stopped until the dye came out the curls straightened the jeans ripped one too many times and I was back to my straight black hair floral pants and the girls with their potato-white hair yelling down the hall asking again and again "why is your hair so ugly?" I stood their trying to keep tears from falling as the rage built in my core until I snapped screaming like a demon I asked them why THEIR hair was so ugly why it was the color of bathroom tiles why it was the color of potatoes why it was the color of mold I screamed at them through tears I screamed until my face was red and my horrible black hair was damp with tears I ran down the hall into the bathroom and cried cried because of ugly hair because of pants that weren't jeans because of girls who'd never understand all because of my stupid black hair
