so sonic generations does take place before sonic 3 (for classic sonic) and after sonic colors (modern sonic) the classic sonic alccoder was unlucky to be thrown into that white space (he was planning to take a trip to angel island before sonic and tails went to angel island for sonic 3) and you will find out the rest when it gets to the end sonic alccoder went back through all the zones modern sonic and classic sonic went through before he was sent back to his timeline
