[English] Black History Month 2023 ----- Happy Black History Month, everyone! Since 1976, Black History Month has been an annual celebration to honor and recognize the history of Black Americans. While Black History Month originates in the United States, it is recognized worldwide and we invite you to celebrate with us! The theme for 2023 is “Black Resistance”, which acknowledges the various ways one can express resistance to oppression and advocate for equality and equity through poetry, music, dance, education, stories, protest, legislation… Create a project in celebration of Black History Month and share it in the studio. Looking for ideas to get started? Here are a few ideas you might consider: 1) Think about the theme of “Black Resistance” and create a project around that: - Learning to read and write when formal education was denied was an act of resistance. You could write your own poem or story on the theme. - Create a virtual gallery highlighting influential Black musicians, political figures, sports figures, writers, or celebrities (past or present!) who have demonstrated resistance, brought allies to the cause, and educated others about oppression by telling their stories or using their status to advocate for social issues and political changes - Bring art and history together by recreating civil rights freedom movement posters - Create a project about how you can be a good ally and support the cause and resist oppression no matter your race or background 2) Celebrate Black History Month more generally. For example, you could: - Create an interactive card to celebrate the month - Animate the name of a person who inspires you in Black history, and share one or two facts about them - Design a dress-up game to help others learn about the history of Black fashion - Write and share a poem in celebration of the month - Share interactive artwork of someone you find inspiring in the civil rights movement (past or present!) - Create a project to help others learn about Black History Month 3) See this project to learn a bit more about Black History Month https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/792971148 And you can see these projects for examples of amazing projects made in past years: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/649025234 and https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/490829700. Remember, these are only suggestions! You are welcome to come up with your own ideas as well, or take inspiration from projects already in the studio. There are so many additional ways to celebrate Black History Month and the choice of what to make is up to you. What will you create? =^..^=
