This is Coryn from Guardians of Ga'Hoole. (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) He was born on the night of the eclipse, as was his mother, Nyra, and an enchantment was cast that made her pure evil, and she thinks the same will happen to him. She lays the egg near to the eclipse, and the Guardians of Ga'Hoole invade the canyonlands and her mate, Kludd, the evil High Tyto, is killed while trying to murder his own brother. Two days later, it's the night of the eclipse, and Nyra pecks on the egg to make it hatch, which only the vilest of owl mothers do. Coryn hatches and she names him Nyroc, predictably, after herself. From the moment Nyroc is born, his mother raises him to become the next High Tyto. She instructs him in how to fly, but criticizes his turns, and calls them "not worthy of a drunk pigeon" - unbelievably, as he flew for the first time better than many adult owls. She teaches him to hunt prey, but when he's caught a chipmunk she squeezes it's blood over his head for some reason, probably it has some evil significance. She tells Nyroc to "hate" and gets him to swear by his father's battle claws to hate, and to kill. He is forbidden to talk about the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. He has firesight, and sees in the fire the truth about his parents; Kludd, attempting to murder his brother four times, Nyra, trying to stab his aunt, Eglantine, Kludd, attempting to kill Soren before being killed by Twilight. Nyroc was always told by his mother that Kludd was a great leader, and was vastly outnumbered and tricked by the Guardians. Nyroc runs away with his friend Phillip, but eventually Nyra fids them and tries to force Nyroc to murder his friend, Philip, to become a Pure One, but Nyroc refuses so Nyra threatens to kill him, scratches his face, then stabs Phillip and rips out his heart which wasn't really necessary. Nyroc yells, "I hate you!" at her and she tries to force him to join the Pure Ones, so he runs away and changes his name to Coryn. And that's just the end of the first book he's in.
