CHAPTER 2: Lucy shook her head, beating back the rush of emotions and memories that flooded her mind. She would not cry. Not now. Not in the middle of her great escape. Luckily, she didn’t cry, but she was surprised at how sad she became, thinking of her family. Rather, her once-was family. Now she was on her own. She kept running. She was tired, but she couldn’t let it through. “I will keep going”, Lucy told herself. She ran and ran, but soon she was out of breath and too tired to continue. She’d been going for days, and she needed to rest. She stopped and laid down, letting herself catch her breath. After collecting herself, Lucy looked around. She couldn’t see much. She was in a huge forest, but the only things around that she could see were trees. Or so it seemed. She laid back down, giving up. She wouldn’t find any better shelter than under a tree or a rock. Well, she would make do with what she had. Lucy closed her eyes and was almost asleep when she heard a noise. What was that? She sat up, her muscles tense. There it was again! It was a scratching sound, like paws on wood. She crept forward. It was coming closer. Closer. Lucy began to panic. What would it do to her? There was no time to run. It was almost there. She laid down and covered her head with her paws, closing her eyes. She waited. Nothing happened. She slowly opened one eye, and instantly jumped back. “Hi”, the dog said. She was standing right in front of Lucy. “Where did you come from?” Lucy asked in shock. “Also, who are you?” The dog laughed. “Oh, did I scare you? I’m sorry. I was just going on my nightly walk when I heard you. You were running really fast.” She laughed. It was a nice laugh. This dog struck Lucy as the type of dog who was always cheerful, which was fine, but it was definitely different. “By the way, my name is Margaret, but you can call me Meg. What’s yours?“ “I’m Lucy”, she said. “Lucy”, said Meg. “That’s a pretty name.” “Thanks.”, Lucy said. She was glad Meg liked her name. She seemed nice, but there was something nagging her that she couldn’t figure out. What was it? Oh! Lucy knew what it was now! “What are you doing in the forest?” Lucy asked. “Me? I live here.”, Meg said. “You live here? How do you sleep? There’s no shelter, no food, no warmth!” Meg giggled. “You’re definitely not from around here, are you?” Lucy shook her head “What are you doing in the forest then?” Meg asked. “It’s a long story.”, Lucy told her. “Then it’s a good thing I’ve got nothing else to do.” And so Lucy began recounting the story.
