Instructions

This project does the same thing as Synthetic Meow, but instead of using a combination of Audacity and Scratch, I did it with the online music tool BeepBox. The upper spectrogram shows the original meow sample. ☛ Click it to listen to the sound. The lower spectrogram shows the synthesized meow I made in BeepBox. ☛ Click it to listen to the sound. ☛ Click the buttons to the left to mute specific tones.

Description

♫ ♫ ♫ Notes ♫ ♫ ♫ If you don't know what a spectrogram is, read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrogram To make this project, I opened the Meow sound in Audacity, and studied the harmonics (the horizontal "lines" you can see). I made four instrument channels - one for each major harmonic (the harmonic with the highest frequency also included all higher harmonics, visible as purple lines). Then there was a process where I made tones, recorded them, compared the spectrogram to the original meow spectrogram, and then changed the notes to resemble the original meow more closely, and then repeated the process until I was happy with the result. Finally, I imported each instrument channel into Scratch as separate sounds, to allow the user to mute any of them. The result is not bad - way better than the one in the original project - but there is still a noticeable difference. As you can see in the spectrograms, the noise between the lines is missing in the synthesized version, which makes it sound muted. Still, It is cool that you can synthesize a sound this well only using sine wave tones :) Here is a link to the BeepBox project: https://www.beepbox.co/#9n40sbk0l00e00t43a3g00j07r1i0o5555T5v5u05f0qk01id04H00074444444400h0E0T5v4u05f0qk010d04H00700000000000h0E0T5v2u05f0qg01d04H07000000000000h0E0T5v1u05f0qg01d04H70000000000000h0E0b4h4p1YH1zKyGn6axuy8M5osvQliUPgAk160H3z-nbT6q2ww8M5pYunWezYrEa20z00 ♫ ♫ ♫ Credits ♫ ♫ ♫ The Meow sound is from the Scratch sound library. The spectrogram images were made with Audacity.
